Job Summary
Overview:
The STEM Ambassador Program (STEMAP) Program Manager position is a full-time, benefited position. The Program Manager will be responsible for directing operations and strategic planning of STEMAP staff and interns, developing and implementing public engagement training services, managing program finances and subcontracts, facilitating collaborative relationships with community and academic partners, and contributing to publications. This position reports to the STEMAP Faculty Director.
Description of STEM Ambassador Program:
The STEM Ambassador Program (STEMAP) is a public engagement project funded by the National Science Foundation to guide scientists to draw on their research, personal interests, and experiences to expand public access to science. The goal of STEMAP is to implement and evaluate our training models to guide scientists to engage with public audiences, with an emphasis on public groups that are underserved or underrepresented in science. Previous engagement projects have taken place in diverse community venues, including senior centers, local businesses, correctional facilities, and public parks.
STEMAP provides in-person and virtual public engagement training to University of Utah (UU) scientists and scientists at other institutions to facilitate public engagement events in their local and regional community venues.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement broader impacts training, staff management, and financial objectives for STEMAP.
Manage the STEMAP budget and authorize the purchase and implementation of new resources and equipment.
Oversee STEMAP staff and intern management, including recruitment, supervision, performance evaluations, and retention.
Lead semester-long STEM Ambassador trainings and provide one-on-one support to scientists preparing engagement materials.
Adapt and improve STEMAP training workshops based on trainee and community partner evaluations.
Form and maintain positive working relationships with administrators and faculty across STEM schools and departments and the Vice President for Research’s Office at the UU to identify departmental training needs and recruit interested trainees.
Facilitate cooperative and collaborative relationships with community partners and other institutions.
Support researchers leading STEMAP at external universities.
Collaborate with the STEMAP team on grant funding applications and peer-reviewed publications.
Represent STEMAP to administrators and extramural colleagues.
Prepare and deliver presentations and project outcomes at conferences.
Coordinate with external STEMAP researchers and evaluators.
Oversee the quarterly publication of the STEMAP newsletter and maintenance of the STEMAP website and social media accounts.
Ensure program compliance with UU, state, and federal policies and regulatory requirements.
Assume authority and perform functions of the Faculty Director in her absence.
Carry out other tasks as directed by the Faculty Director.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related area plus three years of experience in budget, grant and program management or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Develops and implements program ideas into successful academic and research programs; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, Communications, or other relevant program plus three years of experience in budget, grant, and program management or equivalency.

Strong written and oral communication skills
Experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe software
Ability to work in a collaborative, group setting
Preferences:
Effective writing, presentation, and meeting facilitation skills
Experience engaging with the public and forming community partnerships
Project management experience
Familiarity with National Science Foundation’s funding opportunities and Broader Impacts requirements
Experience reviewing and editing National Science Foundation funding proposals
Demonstrated ability to receive nationally competitive grants and fellowships
Extensive experience managing and leading courses or training programs
Ability to creatively problem-solve
Experience in science communication or education
Experience authoring and reviewing peer-reviewed publications
Knowledge of website management
Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., STEM field, science education, science communication)
